‘Seven Deadly Wins’ Mixtape Series: More Envy
April 17, 2009 · 1 Comment

I blended some of my favorite new sounds into a mixtape for your pleasure. Its pretty heavy on the indie sweetness and like Volume One is efficient and beautiful, seven enviably gorgeous tracks in less than fifteen minutes – Perfect for trips to the store, walks around the block, getting dressed to etc.
Drums Please!
Volume 2 starts with the minor key, pop-twee stylings of The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, who try to shake something loose from your heart and hips before handing the baton to Los Campesinos!. Los Campesinos! are all class! Perfect synth melodies layered over guitars, layered over glockenspiel, layered over witty, passionate lyrics and sick beats. Whitest Boy Alive takes over with one of the best tracks off their recent release, “Gravity”; their laid-back soulfulness folds into into the complex, rhythmic sounds of Emilíana Torrini’s “Dead Duck” off her excellent 2008 release, “Me and Armini”. The Hoosiers then inject some beautiful, stirring melodies into the mix before melting into a surprising remix of Cazals‘ hit, “To Cut the Long Story Short”; A tight orchestral arrangement with lush strings, wind instruments and delicate harps.
What are you waiting for?

I wannt hear what you think of it. Did they take it in a new direction? Have they evolved and changed their sound for the better?

Welcome Safariari from Norway who recently sent us a link to their promo site where we could listen to 5 of their songs fo’ free! Of the five songs that were available for download, Stephen recommended the track entitled Lommedisko and I agree with him but I’d also like to draw ya’lls attention to En Lirare and Remington Super 60. The synth riff from En Lirare reminds me of a more upbeat Royksopp and I enjoy the faster tempo that it’s set at. The first half of Remington Super 60 does not suit my fancy but after about 2:45 I love when it transitions into a more disco-y feel with a guitar and a nice filtered clap rather than the previously mentioned cheesy video game music. Unfortunately, I felt like I was playing some 32 bit SNES game when I heard the beginning of this but the last half of this song drew me in. Lastly, Lommedisko just has that perfect 80’s synth for me to instantly like it. I love all the intricate layers with bells and the pitch altered keyboard notes.
Thanks again Stephen for the promo and good luck to Safariari.

The Bird and The Bee/BOTW #1
April 6, 2009 · 1 Comment

Pretty Inside
Bonus Audio:
I put The Bird and The Bee on the “Teenage Drama” mixtape from a while back. Their second release, “Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future” dropped late 2008 and I’m pretty in love with “Love Letter to Japan”. Not only because it reminds me of MPM’s resident pinup, Rumi, but because it has a pretty epic Japanese bridge that puts HeartsRevolution to shame.
Bird and the Bee are the band you wish you were in: cute jazz song ‘bird’ vocalist, perfect pairings of acoustic and electronic elements; perfect guitar/piano pop with subversive lyrics and lush arrangments. It sounds like nothing you’ve heard before (unless you’re a connoseur of Jazz-Pop-Tronica fusion) and listening to Bird and the Bee will make you a better person, and may even make you think about leaving BNGRZ behind for good.
Bird and the Bee is:
Inara ‘Bird’ George, Half-Japanese (maybe) songbird, full-fledged hottie (definitely)
Greg ‘Bee’ Curstin (Producer/Instrumentalist Extraordinaire , you probably heard his touch on Ladyhawke’s debut, the last Kylie record, and an obscure record called Californication by an even smaller band called the Red Hot Chilli Peppers)
SRSLY, HIGHLY RECC’D:
